Game Bub Handheld Console Set to Support Classic Nintendo Games Through Upcoming Crowdfunding Campaign

The Game Bub is a forthcoming handheld gaming console designed to play a variety of classic Nintendo games, specifically for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. This innovative device is not only compatible with ROM files but also allows users to utilize original cartridges, blending modern technology with nostalgic gaming experiences.

Equipped with a Xilinx XC7A100T FPGA, the Game Bub aims to deliver performance that closely resembles that of the original hardware, enhancing the gaming experience beyond what software emulation can provide. Additionally, the device features an ESP32-S3 microcontroller responsible for configuring the FPGA, rendering the user interface, and loading ROM files from a microSD card. It also includes functionality for cartridge backup and restoration.

The Game Bub integrates modern features such as a rechargeable battery, USB-C connectivity, and a backlit IPS LCD display. Users can enjoy stereo sound through built-in speakers, as well as connectivity options including 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy. A Game Bub Dock, equipped with USB and HDMI ports, offers support for external controllers and video output.

Open sourced by developer Eli Lipsitz, the Game Bub encourages users to inspect the underlying code or even create custom FPGA game cores and interactive projects. Those interested in acquiring a pre-built unit can look forward to an upcoming crowdfunding campaign on Crowd Supply.
